Second Annual Celebrity Softball Game set between Dover International Speedway and Pocono Raceway

Dover International Speedway and Pocono Raceway will square off on the diamond for the second straight year as both tracks announced the return of the Second Annual Celebrity Softball Game, featuring NASCAR Sprint Cup Series drivers Clint Bowyer and Kevin Harvick. The game will be played on Wednesday, April 24 at the home of the Harrisburg Senators in Harrisburg, Pa.

Bowyer, driver of the No. 15 5-hour ENERGY Toyota, will captain Team Dover, while Harvick, who pilots the No. 29 Rheem Chevrolet SS, will lead Team Pocono. In the inaugural game last year, Jeff Burton and the team from The Tricky Triangle narrowly defeated Carl Edwards and the Monster Mile after mounting a late comeback.

Access to the celebrity softball game is free with a ticket to that night’s baseball game. Tickets for the Senators game start at just $8, and all children ages 16 and younger that wear their NASCAR gear get a free Senators Hat and free passes to the Kids Play Area. In addition to Bowyer and Harvick, the rosters from each team will be made up of members of national and local motorsports media, as well as other local media personalities, and a few other special guests.

Gates for the game will open at 4 p.m. with the game beginning at 4:30 p.m. Following the softball game, time permitting, Bowyer and Harvick will throw out the first pitch for that evening’s 7:05 p.m. baseball game between the Harrisburg Senators and the visiting Reading Fightin’ Phils. The teams are the AA affiliates of the Washington Nationals and Philadelphia Phillies, respectively.

Throughout both the softball and baseball games, both tracks will be promoting and giving away tickets to their respective NASCAR Sprint Cup Series races which take place on Sunday, June 2 at Dover and Sunday, June 9 at Pocono.

The tracks have also teamed up to offer an all-new ticket package that includes a ticket for each of the tracks’ spring NASCAR Sprint Cup Series races — June 2 at Dover, June 9 at Pocono — as well as a hot dog, beverage and souvenir program for each race. The package costs $158 as the Monster Mile and The Tricky Triangle are only 158 miles apart.

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – Daytona International Speedway President Joie Chitwood provided the following statement Saturday evening:

First and foremost, our thoughts and prayers are with our race fans.

Following the incident, we responded appropriately according to our safety protocols and had emergency medical personnel at the incident immediately.

We transported 14 people off property and 14 were treated at our on-track care center.

We are in the process of repairing the facility, and we will be ready to go racing tomorrow.

During an address to the motorsports community this afternoon at NASCAR’s annual “state of the sport” media event in Charlotte, N.C., Joie Chitwood revealed the first images of what the redeveloped Daytona International Speedway could look like.

The proposed project is designed to provide a better overall race experience for fans, including upgraded concession areas, entrances, ticket gates, grandstands and seating (including the removal of low-level seating that suffers from obstructed views,) as well as interactive common areas that allow for opportunities to watch a race from several vantage points. The speedway had been built to suit the fan base of the 1950′s era. And never forget Daytona’s motto: “Fans ‘R’ 1st At Daytona”

The speedway has been renovated three times, with the infield renovated in 2004, and the track repaved in 1978 and 2010.

The Budweiser Party Porch is a 46 feet high porch located along the backstretch of the track. It is built on top of a portion of the backstretch grandstands and includes a 277 feet wide, 33 feet tall sign. The porch features tables, food and drinks, offering fans a “fun-filled” atmosphere that breaks fans away from the confines of grandstand seating without sacrificing on the view. Below the porch is an interactive fan zone featuring amusement rides, a go-kart track, show cars and merchandise trailers.

Any renovations would not start prior to Speedweek’s or the Daytona 500.

Pre-Season Thunder dates announced for Daytona International Speedway

Daytona’s Preseason Thunder, the annual three-day NASCAR Sprint Cup Series test session at Daytona International Speedway in advance of the season-opening 55th annual Daytona 500.

  • Jan. 10-12
  • 9am and 5pm
  • Weather permitting
  • Each session includes a lunch break from Noon until 1pm

The test sessions mark the first time the new 2013 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series cars, which highlight greater brand identity for the manufacturers, will turn laps on Daytona International Speedway’s 2.5-mile tri-oval.

Daytona Preseason Thunder Fan Fest will also be taking place for race fans on Thursday, Jan. 10 from 5:30 pm  9:30 pm. Fans can watch the track activity from at no cost from a section of the Oldfield Grandstands or the Sprint FANZONE. Tickets for the FanZone during the Daytona Preseason Thunder Fan Fest, which include autograph session wristbands, will be available for purchase at a later date.

Late call sends NASCAR crews, fans scrambling for cover as severe storm hits Pocono Raceway; 1 killed, 9 injured

Jeff Gordon won his first race of the 2012 season and the 86th of his career on Sunday at Pocono Raceway. However, his soggy victory was marred by tragedy. The victory celebration was interrupted by the news that a lightning strike had killed one race fan, and injured 9 others in two different areas – according to Pocono Raceway in a statement released today.

According to the statement, the fan killed was identified as Brian F. Zimmerman of Moosic, Pa. Zimmerman, a father of two, went into cardiac arrest at the scene. Efforts to revive him by emergency responders and doctors at the track were unsuccessful. Zimmerman was pronounced dead at 6:11 p.m. ET Sunday evening, according to Monroe County Coroner Bob Allen.

Harry Lewis, chief of the Pocono Mountain Regional Police, reported the fans were at their Dodge Caravan in the parking lot and had a pop-up canopy located behind the vehicle. It wasn’t clear whether the fans were touching the canopy when the lightning hit.

At approximately 6:35 p.m., the control tower was notified of a second possible lightning strike in the vicinity near Gate 3. That person was taken to the Pocono Raceway’s Infield Medical Center where they were initially treated for minor injuries before being transported to Pocono Medical Center in Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania for further evaluation.

A severe storm warning was issued for the region surrounding the track at 4:12 p.m. At 4:21 p.m., the track issued warnings on its Twitter and Facebook accounts: “ATTENTION FANS: Severe thunderstorms are in the area which will produce high winds and lightning. Should arrive in 10-15 mins.” (See actual tweets below).

At 4:38 p.m., cars were still on the track. NASCAR parked the cars on Lap 98, after they ran seven laps under caution as rain moved into the area. When what started as a light rain became a torrent, NASCAR called the race. The race was called around 4:50 p.m.

Track spokesman Bob Pleban said an announcement was made on the track’s public address system immediately after the race advising fans to leave the grandstands because lightning was imminent.Some race fans tweeted it was hard to hear the announcements as the cars were coming down pit road in the pouring rain.

The questions raised here are: Did NASCAR wait too long to pull the cars off track when a severe thunderstorm warning had been issued for the area and was imminent? Did Pocono Raceway & NASCAR take the correct precautions for fan, NASCAR/Media crew safety to evacuate, seek shelter in time?

If one has ever been to a race, you will know that race fans DO NOT sit in the stands scrolling through their Twitter accounts during a race. And god willing if Facebook should ever load on a mobile phone while sitting in the stands or down in the pits….yet alone, pick up a strong enough signal to even upload a simple picture. Everyone practically knows that, that would NOT be happening with any cell phone. The use of social media in this case, I believe, was the wrong way to notify the fans. Maybe a scrolling message on the Sprint Vision screens that everyone can see. As for the announcement over the public announcement system – how many race fans have headphones on listening to the scanner or MRN radio during a race? I also know for a fact that even at Daytona International Speedway, you can not hear a word on the PA system. It is directed to the fans in the grandstands, not the FanZone which is located above the garage area.

I live in the lightning capital of the world – in Orlando, FL. One thing you never fool around with is Mother Nature. Cloud to ground lighting can happen even outside of a thunder head cloud. Once you hear thunder, you must take precautionary measures by seeking shelter immediately because you can get struck! As with the theme parks, water parks and beaches in Florida – they monitor the storms and evacuate when storms are 15 minutes out and shut/close/evacuate the surrounding area(s). Yes, it may be an inconvenience to some – those who don’t have a clue – but it’s always better to be safe than sorry. Maybe, just maybe, NASCAR should have pulled the cars from the track sooner than they did. They had put the crews at risk as well.

As with anything bad, something good comes out of it. I see maybe tougher weather warnings/rules being applied at all NASCAR sanctioned tracks in light of this tragedy and more lives can maybe saved in the future.

But one must realize it is in their OWN hands to act like an adult and be responsible during certain situations also.

As of the time of this posting, NASCAR has not released a statement about the incident at Pocono Raceway.

Brett Bodine takes Racingal.com for a ride on Daytona International Speedway

I had my initiation this afternoon at Daytona International Speedway and WOW!

I had the opportunity to take a media pace car ride on Daytona International Speedway this afternoon with none other than Brett Bodine.

Being able to go around Daytona International Speedway in a Ford Mustang Official Pace Car, hugging the backstretch wall, going a 130 mph was an incredible experience!! I was also treated to what other media members call a “Brett Bodine Special” -  Bodine drives around Daytona International Speedway with ONE hand on the steering wheel, going into the turns!

Going that speed at the 31 degrees of banking in the turns really makes it look as though you are driving up a hill and boy, those G forces…..! Bodine actually brought the Mustang to a crawl in the turn just so I could feel the 31 degree angle. Amazing!

I got out of the car and couldn’t stop smiling! I told Bodine “It might be 104 degrees out here, but I have goosebumps!!!” It was an overwhelming experience I will forever treasure!

Daytona International Speedway implements smoking ban in grandstands

My, how the times have changed. And for the better.

Remember the R. J. Reynolds Tobacco Company when they held the sponsorship to the NASCAR Cup series – known then as the Winston Cup Series – running from 1971–2003? Stock car racing has a major history with tobacco and the highly visible use of tobacco by drivers, their racing teams, owners and fans. I even remember the days when fans were able to sign up to receive information and coupons from Winston with the pretty Winston Girls at the hospitality tents (as long as you were the legal age of 18) in exchange for a free pack of Winston cigarettes race day.

If Winston wasn’t your brand that you smoked, it was that day.

Daytona International Speedway is wiping their hands of all smoking and have placed a smoking band in their grandstands to make them smoke free while making it more enjoyable for fans to watch a race. So what started this? According to Daytona International Speedway Vice President Andrew Gurtis, “it was actually fan feedback after last year’s events which led to the speedway to have the grandstands become smoke free.”

Students Working Against Tobacco (SWAT) is a statewide youth organization that works to mobilize today’s youth to de-glamorize and de-normalize tobacco use. SWAT is a united movement of youth which works towards a tobacco free future. SWAT recently applauded Daytona International Speedway for its bold move in protecting patrons from second-hand smoke starting with the Subway Jalapeno 250 and Coke Zero 400 weekend. According to the U.S. Surgeon General, even second-hand smoke contains over 7,000 chemicals with hundreds that are toxic, and 69 that can cause cancer.

NASCAR driver and Tobacco Free Florida spokesperson Jeffrey Earnhardt stated, “I’m proud that leading race organizations like Daytona are protecting our fans from tobacco smoke and are showing young fans that smoking is no longer acceptable.” Earnhardt, who will also be sponsored by Tobacco Free Florida during the Subway Jalapeno 250 Nationwide race Friday night, July 6th, added “I had family members that smoked – and I’ll tell you a funny story,” Earnhardt said, “I use to stay at my grandma’s house, but I would leave my clothes out in the car so they wouldn’t smell like smoke.”

Daytona International Speedway feels they are setting a prime example for other tracks, that smoke free is the way to go. In the meantime, the COPD (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease) Foundation’s “DRIVE4COPD” just recently renewed it’s sponsorship entitlement with Daytona International Speedway through 2014.

THREE NASCAR drivers – ONE top groove = TWO day Goodyear Tire test at Bristol

Bristol Motor Speedway has witnessed the initial laps on its recently altered surface. On day one of a two-day Goodyear Tire test, which ended Wednesday, Tony Stewart (#14), Jeff Burton (#31) and Clint Bowyer (#15) circled the half-mile concrete oval, and will wrap up the session on Wednesday. While it’s impossible to predict how the racing action will be when NASCAR hits Bristol for August race week and the IRWIN Tools Night Race, the trio of drivers offered their comments following a full day of lapping the banks of Bristol. The same drivers will return on Wednesday to complete the Goodyear Tire test. Goodyear has mandated that the test sessions are closed to the public and media.

No. 14 Tony Stewart (who is the only driver to try to run the high groove): “Well, you’ve definitely lost the top groove. Guys who run up there aren’t going to be able to do that because it’s pretty slick up there. There’s going to be less room to race, that’s for sure. We’ve gone from a three-groove track to two grooves and any time you’ve got less room to get around it can get pretty interesting. I’m one of the guys who likes that high groove so it’s really going to change things up for me. It’ll change things for everybody though because when you take away room to race on a track this small with 43 cars& yeah, it’s going to tighten things up.”

No. 15 Clint Bowyer: “That outside line  the upper groove  is out of play now. There’s going to be a lot closer racing then we’ve had here in the past. I don’t typically run up there but a lot of guys do and I can’t see them going up there now. If they do& it’s pretty slippery and they’ll figure that out in a hurry. The closer we have to race just means something’s going to happen. Is it going to make fans happy? Well, narrowing up the track means less room to get around so there’s no question there’s going to be closer action.”

No. 31-Jeff Burton: “Goodyear is looking to bring a tire with more grip. I really think they have found some stuff that is really promising. As for the track itself, I really can’t imagine running up there in that top groove. I think it is going to force everyone more to the middle and bottom of the track. The drivers aren’t going to be happy, but the spectators probably will be because it is going to put more cars in a closer space. By taking away that groove, it is going to change your mind about going up there. I think it is going to be two grooves, unless Goodyear brings a tire with a lot of grip. If that is the case, you’ll want to run around the bottom. Making the groove smaller is a good thing, it is going to put the action back to the bottom and middle of the track. What has changed is up near the wall, the bottom is the same. Tony experimented and tried out that top groove, and I know he won’t be trying that again. If people liked the older track more than the new, they are going to like this. This takes the top groove out and brings it back toward the old track. Taking the groove out moves the track closer to what it used to be.”

Speeding penalties set NASCAR record at Pocono Raceway

As I have been stating since the beginning in my articles, this is a record-setting season for NASCAR.

The repave promised to prove that speeds would be a lot faster, but no one thought it would actually apply to pit road as well.

Ah, but it did.

The Pocono 400 Presented by #NASCAR resulted in more than just advertising the new Twitter / #NASCAR Page event – it also presented itself with a record-breaking 22 pit road speeding penalties. The following infractions were recorded by NASCAR for entering/leaving pit road at too fast of a speed:

The repave at Pocono Raceway included the extension of pit road. According to Robin Pemberton, NASCAR’s vice president of competition, the number of segments grew from 10 to 11, and the length of the final segment increased from 56 to 83 feet. NASCAR measures pit road speed from the yellow line at the entrance to pit road to the yellow line at the exit. The full distance is divided into segments, and drivers must average the speed limit (plus a tolerance of 4.99 mph) through each segment.

But there’s a catch: NASCAR provides specific information on the pit road configuration to any team that WANTS it. It’s not actually handed out directly TO the teams (as it is when there’s a rule change by NASCAR), but it IS available for the taking.

According to NASCAR, every week they are at a race track they make maps available for crew chiefs to have of the timing sections on pit road. Some opt to take one, others choose to measure their own lines, and some go off of last year’s measurements. “Our position is like it’s always been – yellow line to yellow line,” said Pemberton. So, therefore, NASCAR is confident in the pit road timing system at Pocono Raceway.

To conclude without recapping what everyone witnessed on Sunday – I do want to say congratulations to Joey Logano on his win at Pocono Raceway and his comment of “I hope it shuts ‘em all up,” during his Victory Lane interview with TNT, in regards to his win less streak in Sprint Cup, and winning in the Nationwide Series. This was Logano’s first victory and first top-10 finish in seven races at Pocono Raceway. At the age of 22, he became the youngest series winner at Pocono.
