After first Chase race, seedlings got all shook up for Loudon, NH

Heading into New Hampshire this weekend, the previous No. 1 seed was Denny Hamlin until he dropped to fourth, 15 points behind Brad Keselowski, when his No. 11 Joe Gibbs Racing Toyota ran short of fuel on the final lap of last weekend’s GEICO 400 at Chicagoland Speedway. Second-place finisher Jimmie Johnson retained the No. 2 spot three points behind the lead while the No. 3 seed, Tony Stewart, is third, eight points back.

Wild Card qualifier Kasey Kahne made the biggest gain – six positions from 11th to fifth, tied with Hamlin and Clint Bowyer 15 points behind Keselowski. Greg Biffle dropped three spots to eighth; Matt Kenseth three positions to 11th and Kevin Harvick a single position to 10th. Wild Card qualifier Jeff Gordon lost the most in terms of points after his No. 24 Chevy hit the wall hard due to a stuck throttle, dropping the four-time champion 47 points out of the lead to 12th.

Considering Dale Earnhardt, Jr. started in the back of the field last weekend due to an engine change, Earnhardt Jr. was pleased with an eighth-place finish in the Chase opener. However, wins were big in the regular season and will be the main ingredient to what it takes to contend for the championship.

July’s top five was Kahne, Hamlin, Bowyer, Earnhardt Jr. and Keselowski. Eight Chase drivers have New Hampshire victories led by Gordon, Johnson and Stewart with three wins apiece. The other winners are Bowyer (two), Kahne, Biffle, Hamlin and Harvick.

SHR’s Ryan Newman could be this week’s non-Chase “spoiler.” He swept last year’s Coors Light Poles at the 1.058-mile track and continues to seek his 50th NASCAR Sprint Cup pole.

Husband forced into emergency ‘pit stop’ at New Hampshire Motor Speedway

SAD UPDATE 10/12/2012:

Laconia Police Capt. Matt Canfield said the baby girl born at New Hampshire Motor Speedway last month when her mother went into labor before she could reach the hospital has died.  READ.

##

Oh, I love stories that are unexpected and have a very happy ending! I came across this story on New Hampshire Motor Speedway’s website and thought I’d share.

Last Friday, Sept. 14th, a couple were on their way to Concord Hospital, N.H. with the wife in labor, when suddenly the husband was forced to make an emergency pit stop at NHMS.

The baby was not going to wait.

The mother, very quickly, gave birth to the couple’s fourth child, a baby girl, in their vehicle in the speedway’s parking lot. The panicked father then ran into the speedway’s main office and asked for help.

Who knew that stopping at a speedway would reward one with EMT’s right on hand?

The EMT services helped with what they could, and called for an ambulance to transport mother and baby. Upon checking later on, the hospital reported mother and baby were doing fine.

Speedway General Manager, Jerry Gappens awarded “Baby Katie” two tickets to our NASCAR races for the rest of her life.

“That little one is part of our family now. She and her parents are welcome here anytime,” said Gappens.

Congratulations to the family o their new addition!!

Miscommunication costs JGR’s No. 11 Denny Hamlin race at NHMS

crew chief

A miscommunication on a late pit stop between Denny Hamlin and crew chief Darian Grubb dropped Hamlin from the lead to 12th.

Miscommunication can turn out to be lethal during a NASCAR race if it happens between crew chief and driver.

Take Joe Gibbs Racing. During the final laps of the LENOX Industrial Tools 301 at New Hampshire Motor Speedway, driver Denny Hamlin of the No. 11 FedEx Camry, who finished second, respectively, and crew chief Darian Grubb had a major miscommunication before the last pit stop of the race.

The miscommunication centered around whether to take two tires or four on the final stop. Grubb wanted to go with two tires, which would have kept them on par with the rest of the field, but he thought Hamlin wanted fresh rubber on both sides — hence, the four-tire call.

“Darian asked me how much of the tires I felt like I used up,” Hamlin said. He said, “I think two’s the call.”

“I said, OK – just give me tires and no adjustments.” Grubb took that as I meant four tires. It was just a little miscommunication that turned a possible win into a second-place finish. You never know what could have happened on that last restart if we had taken two tires. The No. 5 of Kasey Kahne still may have been better, you never know.

The No. 11 FedEx Camry of JGR was the top-finishing Toyota in Sunday’s NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race at New Hampshire Motor Speedway. Hamlin led the field five times for a race-high 150 laps (of 301) — after starting third.

Hamlin was very disappointed because he had the dominant car for most of the race. “They gave me a new package this time around. We dominated all the practices and it showed in the race what we had. It’s part of it,” said Hamlin. The last pit stop had put Hamlin from first place, back to 12th. The bottom line was they just didn’t have enough laps to catch Kahne and came up short. “It’s days like these that you can just build on,” said Hamlin, “We’re going to be back here in just a few months – when it really counts – and that’s when you want to win — so we know we have something to race with. I would have loved to get win 200 for No.11 team. That part of it is frustrating that we can’t break through and get that. We’re getting close.”

Tony Stewart and Stewart-Haas Racing teammate Ryan Newman – who’s fighting for a Chase “wild card” berth – won both New Hampshire races a year ago. Newman and Stewart finished one-two in the summer; Stewart won at Loudon in the fall, the second of five Chase victories that led to his third NASCAR Sprint Cup championship.

Clint Bowyer, on top of the world just days ago as the winner in Sonoma, finds himself the “bubble boy” – 10th in the standings – headed for New England. Good news: Bowyer is the only two-time winner in Loudon over the past nine races.

The “wild card” race remains anything but tame. A three-way deadlock for the 12th Chase spot was broken in Daytona but Joey Logano can’t take an easy breath. He is, however, a former New Hampshire winner. Logano’s a point ahead of defending race winner Ryan Newman; three ahead of Coca-Cola 600 winner Kasey Kahne.

Jeff Burton is New Hampshire’s leading winner with four victories but none since 2000. Fresh off of his second-place finish in the Coke Zero 400, will put him back in Victory Lane for the first time since Charlotte in the fall of 2008.

Saturday’s New Hampshire stop signals the first round of the NASCAR Nationwide Series’ Dash 4 Cash and a $100,000 payoff for four of the series’ elite performers. Points leader Elliott Sadler, Sunoco Rookie of the Year headliner Austin Dillon, defending series champion Ricky Stenhouse Jr. and rising star Michael Annett face off with the highest finisher claiming the 100K.

It’s a race within a race as the top finisher of the four wins the $100,000 and eligibility for the next round at Chicagoland Speedway on July 15. The next three points-eligible finishers in New Hampshire also qualify for the following week’s $100,000 face-off.

Should the same driver win the first three rounds at New Hampshire, Chicago and Indianapolis, plus the Iowa 250 his overall total winnings will reach $1 million.

Both Danica Patrick and Travis Pastrana will compete in Saturday’s New Hampshire race. At Daytona, Patrick again was on the leading edge of becoming NASCAR’s first national series female winner, leading five times for 14 laps at Daytona International Speedway, before being collected in a late accident. Pastrana will be making his fifth appearance of the season and first since Charlotte in late May. His best finish to date is 17th at Darlington.

NASCAR Camping World Truck Series return to action in Saturday’s American Ethanol 200 at Iowa Speedway. Three Iowa races have produced three different winners with resurgent Matt Crafton, coming off a fourth-place finish and Keystone Light Pole at Kentucky Speedway, hoping to duplicate last year’s victory.

Points leader Timothy Peters hasn’t had much success at Iowa Speedway. He currently leads Justin Lofton and Ty Dillon by four points each followed by James Buescher and Parker Kligerman. Dillon won last year’s Iowa ARCA race and helped 2012 champion and older brother Austin Dillon celebrate his first NCWTS victory in 2010 at Iowa Speedway.

New Hampshire Motor Speedway offers Twitter followers chance to wave qualifying flag

Ten lucky fans will have the opportunity to wave the green flag during NASCAR Sprint Cup Series qualifying during Fans First Pole Day on Friday, Sept. 23.  The contest will be run through Twitter and entering is simple.

Anyone that takes a picture at the track from now through Thursday and shares it on Twitter using #ILoveNHMS will be entered to win.  There is a maximum of one entry per day.  Pictures may be of anything from the track to FanFest to your camper to, well, whatever strikes your creative mind!

Entries will be randomly selected, so while you’re encouraged to take good photos, you don’t have to be a professional photographer to stand a chance at winning.  Winners will be selected Friday morning and contacted via Twitter.  Due to the nature of the contest, everyone that wins must be present to participate and if you can’t make it, there is no way to reschedule or substitute prizes.

Each winner will have the opportunity to wave the flag for one Sprint Cup driver during their qualifying session, which begins at 3:10 p.m. on Sept. 23.  Winners will be assigned a driver and will not be able to choose any specific vehicle.  Ear protection is recommended.
