Danica Patrick to tour, award “Coke Zero Tailgate Champion” to best decorated campsite at ‘Dega

BE217895A1F14D4F8F17FD3443CF6E46Race fans! Have you heard the buzz? It’s time to get creative and dress up your campsite! Talladega Superspeedway is ready to start a new tradition and to show other tracks how to to party the right way!

After spending time on Talladega Boulevard last year during her first trip to the 2.66-mile track, Patrick saw it to be “party central” for fans that featured fun, music, dancing, food, beverages and the most unique display of colorful creativity when it came to the décor of each campsite.

Plans are for Danica to award the “Coke Zero Tailgate Champion” trophy Saturday afternoon, at some point following the conclusion of the Aaron’s 312 NASCAR Nationwide Series race.

The most notorious strip of real estate in NASCAR, Talladega Boulevard, is an innovative corridor like no other and has been a mainstay in NASCAR circles since the track was built in 1969. The Mardi Gras-type atmosphere of The Boulevard, complete with strings of beads and shenanigans, is a NASCAR tradition that separates Talladega from other venues. It truly is a sight to behold how tents, RVs, trucks and trailers, with an abundance of ingenuity and creativity, can liven up a large crowd of people.

Racing returns to Talladega Superspeedway for the May 3-5  Aaron’s Dream Weekend.  Secure your tickets at www.talladegasuperspeedway.com or by calling 877-Go2-DEGA.  This is more than a race…This is Talladega!

Dale Earnhardt Jr. out next two races, Regan Smith to drive No. 88 Hendrick Chevy

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

HENDRICK MOTORSPORTS STATEMENT

CONCORD, N.C. (Oct. 11, 2012) Dale Earnhardt Jr. will not compete in the upcoming NASCAR Sprint Cup Series events at Charlotte Motor Speedway and Kansas Speedway after being diagnosed with a concussion following the Oct. 7 race at Talladega, Ala.

Earnhardt, driver of the No. 88 Chevrolets for Hendrick Motorsports, was diagnosed Wednesday afternoon in Charlotte. Regan Smith will be the team’s substitute driver at Charlotte and Kansas.

##

Dale Earnhardt Jr. suffered a concussion in the “big one” at the end of Sunday’s race at Talladega, which involved 25 cars. Earnhardt is 11th in the Chase for the Sprint Cup standings, but missing the next two races will eliminate him from championship contention.

In a news conference Thursday morning, Earnhardt said he did not feel right after crashing during a tire test at Kansas Speedway back on Aug. 29. “The wreck at Kansas was really severe and it surprised me,” Earnhardt said saying that he now regrets not seeing a doctor after the Kansas crash.

*NOTE: Regan Smith was scheduled to drive Phoenix Racing’s No. 51 car this weekend. AJ Allmendinger is expected to drive the car now, team officials said.

Kurt Busch’s final race with Phoenix Racing ends with black flag at ‘Dega

Kurt Busch, driver of the #51 Phoenix Construction Chevrolet, spins out after leading at Talladega Superspeedway. Credit: John Harrelson/Getty Images for NASCAR

Kurt Busch was leading the race at Talledga until lap 99, when apparently he had run out of gas. Going at those speeds, with the pack behind you, and you run out of gas could lead to terminal circumstances, as it did for Busch. Jamie McMurray hit the No. 51 Chevrolet from behind, sending him spinning and hitting the inside retaining wall.

Apparently, when the car came to a rest, Busch had taken off his helmet and climbed out to check the car and noticed he could continue to the garage for the team to repair it and get it back out.

However, in the meantime the safety crew had shown up, placed their gear on the back of the car and went to assist Busch for his mandatory ambulance ride to the infield care center. But Busch had something else on his mind… to get to the garage. So he took off. Apparently he wasn’t totally out of gas….

NASCAR and team GM Steve Barkdoll were yelling at him to stop – but without his helmet on – Busch didn’t hear the commands and was eventually black flagged by NASCAR for ignoring the request.

“I guess they were telling me to stop. That is the competitor, that is the desire I have to stay in the race and to keep going,” he said. “I got out of the car, I kept going and saw the car would roll and it didn’t have flat tires.

“I was hoping to get the car back to the garage to work on it and get back in this race. NASCAR was yelling at me to stop, I didn’t have my helmet on and I was in worse trouble. This is the story of my life. Kurt Busch. Leading the race, runs out of gas, tries to get back in the race with that competitive desire, gets yelled at by NASCAR and now I have a storm of media around me and I don’t know what to even say or what to do next.”

That’s his story, and he’s sticking to it.

This was the conclusion of the (team) relationship between Kurt Busch and Phoenix Racing with the results after 29 Cup races together only earning two top-10s and six DNFs. Busch will drive for Furniture Row Racing starting next weekend at Charlotte and for the 2013 season, while displaced Regan Smith will take over the No. 51 Chevrolet at Charlotte.

Good luck Furniture Row, you are going to need it!

NASCAR’s 2013 car test at Talladega Superspeedway returns good input from teams

Teams testing at Talladega Superspeedway on Wednesday. Photo by Getty Images

Teams tested the 2013 model, which will highlight greater brand identity for the series’ manufacturers, searching for data on aerodynamics, cooling and drivability. The new-look cars turned competitive laps while drafting and in single-car runs.

“With a different car, we’ll look at what it’s going to take for [restrictor] plate size and some other things, but the main concern is how the cars draft, how they react in the draft, and obviously to get more one-on-one racing,” said Robin Pemberton, NASCAR vice president of competition. “All of the input that we have from the drivers and the teams so far has been pretty good.”

The series’ automakers, which have worked extensively with NASCAR to bring the new NASCAR Sprint Cup car to life, were well-represented at the 2.66-mile track:

  • Chevrolet, which will run the 2013 SS model, was supported by Richard Childress Racing’s Jeff Burton, Hendrick Motorsports’ Kasey Kahne and Earnhardt Ganassi Racing’s Juan Pablo Montoya.
  • Ford, which will field an all-new Fusion next season, was represented by Penske Racing’s Sam Hornish Jr. and Roush Fenway Racing’s Ricky Stenhouse Jr.
  • Toyota was represented by Joey Logano driving the 2013 Camry for Joe Gibbs Racing and Brian Vickers at the wheel for Michael Waltrip Racing.

The new car design will kick off the 2013 NASCAR Sprint Cup season Feb. 24 at Daytona International Speedway with the Daytona 500, stock-car racing’s premier event.

ARCA’s Carter-2-Motorsports fielding four cars at ‘Dega

The final restrictor plate race of the season is upon the ARCA Racing Series presented by Menards and Carter-2-Motorsports, one of the full-time teams on the tour will field four Dodge Chargers in Friday’s International Motorsports Hall of Fame 250 at Talladega Superspeedway.

On the heels of their season-best finish last Sunday afternoon at Salem (Ind.) Speedway, the Mooresville, North Carolina-based team is hoping to turn the finish into some momentum at the 2.66-mile superspeedway.

Larry Barford Jr., (read Racingal.com’s article on Larry) will play the lead role for the C2M team on Friday behind the wheel of the No. 04 First (1st) Mariner Bank / Trauma Doc Dodge Charger while team owner Roger Carter II takes his turn behind the wheel for the first-time in 2012 behind the wheel of the No. 67 Ron Paul 2012 Dodge Charger.

Superspeedway veteran Donnie Neuenberger (read Racingal.com’s article on Donnie) returns to the series vying for a starting spot in the No. 97 Eagle Convenience Stores Dodge Charger and the team welcomes newcomer Greg Hutto Jr., a native of Grand Bay, Alabama behind the wheel of the No. 40 Affordable Auto Glass / Suncoast Auto Sales Dodge Charger.
